Oxygen is essential for the metabolic process of marine life; from fish to corals to bacteria, organisms utilize O2 while displacing CO2. Beyond the living components, oxygen is also depleted by organic materials such as Dissolved Organic Compounds, uneaten food, and fish detritus. Nitrifying bacteria in particular can rapidly deplete oxygen levels.
